Parenting & Family

On Child Training:

“We teach them that they broke God’s law when they disobeyed mommy and touched the stove, or, you know, when they were socking their sibling in the face. They weren’t kind. And now it’s time to do a little discipline. And there have been points in our raising of our children where, you know, after correcting them for the 15th time on any given dayand believe me this happenswe finally turn to them say, you know, ‘Why can’t you obey mommy and daddy?’

“And they’ll say something like, ‘Daddy, I just can’t be good.’ And that’s the point at which we step in and say, ‘Yes, that’s it. You got it. That’s the point we’ve been trying to make all day. You know, you can’t be good. That’s the issue. You can’t be good. And that’s why the Lord Jesus Christ had to come…’

“…Now, there’s a special needs child who’s proving the point, you know, every day that, you know, he’s perhaps proving the point better than anybody else that this is why Jesus came…

“…And yeah, we point out their problems. And yes, the rod is a matter of correction, you know, it points out their weaknesses, but the rod cannot make them good. The rod cannot cleanse them from their sins. The rod can only give them a little bit of external obedience at points.”

On Teaching Physics:

“While helping my daughter with her physics lessons I burst out into prayer on occasion, praising God for His amazing creation. References to God, and prayers giving glory to God, are few and far between in most science textbooks written for Christian home schools. Christian parents must improvise as they teach these subjects.”

On…I don’t know how to title this:

“When a father is given to pornography and self-gratification, he should not be surprised to see homosexuality in the life of his son or daughter.”

On His Vision for His Daughter:

“My daughter has turned 13 and she is becoming a mature woman already in many ways. She helps mom around the house in so many different ways. She helps with the younger children in the home. I’m beginning to think about marriage for my daughter. Obviously not now, she’s 13, but my grandmother was married at 15.

“Now, again, this is interesting: As we begin to bring this up I’ll betcha there are some feminists out there that are listening to the program that are saying, ‘That is anathema! The concept that a girl could be married at 15, 16, 17, or 18 years old is anathema to the modern world… That’s one of the most evil things that could ever happen if you ever do something like that.’

“But Dave, I think that’s because people have very short-sighted values. The vision for their daughters is that they get that girl into a good college, they get ‘em into a corporation, they work for slave-labor rates, they get them into debt, and then she works her whole life so she can pay her social security taxes, and then the government euthanizes her in 20, 30 years. Or 50 years from now. That’s their value. That’s their vision…

“…My values, and I think of the Dugger family— Remember the Dugger family, we interviewed them a week or two ago– and they have, I think, closer to what I would say are my values.

“My values are to establish a vision for my daughter such that she would fear God and keep his commandments. That she would raise her children with strong character, that she would– I would like her to have sixteen children like the Duggers do. Sixteen children that love her, and that she loves, and she raises them, and they of course would take care of her if she becomes– to the point where she can’t take care of herself in her old age. ”

On Parental Rights:

“Criminals have rights in this nation, but parents do not…

“Two million parents in this nation every year go through a social services investigation. These are not child abusing parents, these are not criminals, these are innocent parents. Many of them do not have good attorneys and something goes sideways they end up losing their children ”

On Legal Issues:

“Every year, millions of parents and children are hassled by truancy laws, compulsory attendance laws, child labor laws, curfew laws, spanking laws, and social services, based on anonymous tips–almost all notorious violations of family liberties as defined by the law of God.”

– Kevin Swanson
“Family life” page 189

On Spanking & Throwing Away Science:

“Silence, everyone! The scientists have spoken. A five-decade-long study has finally reached the conclusion to the whole matter spanking is deleterious to the well-being of society. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan have analyzed 75 studies, and they have 500,000 pages of data! The wizards that peep and mutter have spoken, but we go back to the law and to the testimony, finding that there is no light. Here is a good study of utilitarian ethics and modern science. We also point out that the wrong worldview looks for the wrong outputs AND the wrong inputs in these studies. We end up throwing the whole 50-year study in the wastebasket.”

On “Strong Willed” and Special Needs Children:

“The strong-willed child and the special-needs child (or whatever label is used for him) only show more clearly their need for Jesus Christ and His salvation each and every time they disobey their mothers… Every time that child sins, the parent should be doubly confident in the power of grace to save him from sin. The child only proves that the parent, the rod, and the corrections cannot save that child from hell without the attendant grace of Jesus Christ. True, the rod plays a part in teaching a child his need for Christ, and to that extent it leads him to the gospel (Prov 23:14).”

After one day of unsuccessfully trying to potty train his fourth child:

“As I was changing her clothes for the umpteenth time, I happened to notice that she was resisting my attempts to dress her. Then it hit me: maybe this child’s problem was not physical or intellectual at all. Maybe the problem we were dealing with was a character problem.”

On his own Homeschooled Upbringing:

“Even those who recognize some value in sheltering would have thought my parents had overdone it. Books in the house were scoured and edited, sometimes with black markers. The only American movie I remember watching during my teenage years was The Sound of Music. But somewhere around the semi-romantic scene, ‘I am 16, going on 17,’ the television went off, and we were all sent off to bed.”

On Courtship & Protecting Daughters:

“…[H]ow much should a father be involved in a courtship, in the courtship of his daughter? Well, what does the Bible say?

“Immediately, we go to Numbers 30 and verse 4. And what does Numbers 30 and verse 4 say? It says, if a daughter makes a vow and the father hears of it, he has the right to veto that vow on the day he hears of it. And he can also hold his peace and allow the vow to stand. Now what does the Bible say about the involvement of a father in the courtship of his daughter?

“It doesn’t have all that much to say about it. It offers him the veto power, but it doesn’t tell him when to use it, how to use it, and how often to use it. Why? Because the operating principle is love your neighbor as yourself. The operating principle is seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you….

“How much do you love your daughter? How much do you love your God? And the tough thing about this is there are a thousand counterfeits out there. Do you understand that man who sent his daughter to homecoming dance and she became the victim of the Gibeah moment in Richmond, California, would probably tell you that of course he loves his daughter. He might say it with as much sincerity as you can say that today.”

On Civil Penalties for Fornication:

“And if a man fornicates with a betrothed woman, he is put to death. And if she consented to it, she is put to death as well. In the case of a young woman or young man who fornicates outside of the bounds of marriage without the betrothal, the fine is about a three-year salary for the young man. Which by the way, if we did that in our present systems, you’d have far, far less fornications going on. If a guy had to fork up $150,000 or work 7, 8, 9 years in order to pay off the fine for fornicating one night with some girl, there’d be a lot less fornication in America, you would think.

“You would think. God’s law has a lot of wisdom to it, don’t throw it away. Good stuff. “

Marriage & Gender Roles

On the Need for Patriarchs:

“So, again, the church is broken down, the family is broken down, the society is broken down– because we don’t have patriarchs, loving shepherds shepherding their homes. ”

– Kevin Swanson
Source

On Patriarchy:

“Praise God for patriarchy! God established fathers to be the leaders – the loving leaders – in homes and He has called them ‘heads of the wife’ even as Christ is head of the church, but they of course are to love their wives to the point of sacrifice. And Dave, you know, fathers are not leading today. We have an extreme wimpified society where men do not assume responsibility. We have a feminized culture, and this has produced, I think, a tremendous dysfunctionality. ”

Conversing with Jennie Chancey:

“Jennie, let’s talk about what dads can do to encourage femininity vs. feminism in their little daughters. I’ve got four myself, and we really want to raise feminine daughters, those that understand their God-given roles…..

“Folks, it matters how you raise your daughters. Are you raising them to be feminine or feminist? How you raise your daughters will determine to a great extent how they turn out. We have found a great resource for raising daughters. It is one of my very favorite books on the topic, it’s called ‘So Much More‘ by the Botkin sisters.”

On Submission to Husbands:

“Mainly and finally, the wife should submit to her husband’s directions and obey him (even if she should disagree with him). Only in cases when his directions constitute a clear and obvious conflict with the laws of God should she consider disobeying. Then, I would recommend her doing this only after consultation with the elders in her church assembly.”

– Kevin Swanson
“Family Life” pages 28-29

On Love & Respect:

“I mean I can talk about cherishing the treasure, but sometimes it’s hard to cherish the treasure. But God says you ought to love your wife as Christ loved the church. And were there points at which the church was not lovable? Of course. Jesus loved the church that didn’t love him first.

“And so brothers, we need to be loving our wives when she’s not lovable. Of course she’s got to respect her husband even when her husband is not respectable. There are times when he is not respectable. But believe it or not, when a wife respects a husband when he is not respectable, it is precisely her respecting her husband when he’s not respectable that makes him respectable. Right, brothers?”

On Educating his Son:

“When he turned 11 years old, the Lord brought a crisis into our lives that pointed me back to the relationship. After much prayer we reached the decision that my wife would no longer homeschool our son. He would be with me. He had been surrounded by four little women and a mother every day, and it was obvious that it was going to be pretty tough for him to grow into a man that way.”

On a Child’s Gender Determining their Calling:

“The first difference you will note between children in the determination of calling is gender. This should be an obvious difference, though it is sadly ignored in many cases today. After taking account of gender differences, each child’s calling will then depend on the gifts and abilities that God has given him.”

– Kevin Swanson
“Upgrade: 10 Secrets to the Best Education for Your Child” pages 10-11

On Educating Daughters:

“I think there is a distinction between how you would educate a young man and a young woman, you know God sets out a different objective. He wants us to set a goal, a vision in mind for raising our daughters to be help meets for their husbands, Genesis chapter two. Oikos, despotels, or home managers, keepers at home, translated different ways in 1 Timothy 5 and Titus chapter 2, but that’s an objective, that’s a goal, that’s what we’re supposed to train our daughters to be. They’re to be modest in dress, and modest in heart… a meek and quiet spirit. So you have all these sort of objectives, these character traits that are specific to gender.”

On Biblical Womanhood & the Girl Scouts:

“The individualism of feminism has been devastating to this country. I’d say you ought to say no to the Girl Scout cookies too. I don’t want to support lesbianism, I don’t want to support Planned Parenthood and I don’t want to support abortion, and if that be the case I’m not buying Girl Scout cookies. Now I suppose if you take a big, fat, black magic marker and you say, ‘give me that box,’ and you start marking out all of the references to the Girl Scouts of America on all the boxes then maybe we’re not promoting that organization anymore and I’d be willing to buy it. Maybe it’s not food offered to idols anymore if I had the opportunity to scratch out references to the Girl Scouts of America on the boxes of the Girl Scout cookies offered to me at Safeway.

“…I don’t want to promote a wicked organization that according to its own website doesn’t promote godly womanhood, it just doesn’t, I don’t see anything that promotes godly womanhood. The vision of the Girl Scouts of America is antithetical to a biblical vision for womanhood, it’s antithetical to it.”

Culture, Worldview, & Politics

On the Death Penalty for Homosexuality:

“Yes, Leviticus 20:13 calls for the death penalty for homosexuals. Yes, Romans chapter 1 verse 32, the Apostle Paul does say that homosexuals are worthy of death. His words, not mine! …I am willing to go to jail for standing on the truth of the Word of God… many have told me this weekend, ‘You be careful. You choose your words carefully, we have presidentials coming down to this conference this weekend.’ I understand that. But I am not ashamed of the truth of the Word of God. And I am willing to go to jail for it.

“Then they asked me, ‘Yes, but do you advocate for our civil leaders to do this today?’ And my answer is: no. But why? Here’s why…

“It’s because we need some time for homosexuals to repent. That’s why. We need time for adulterers– and friends, please understand, there is not much difference between adultery and homosexuality as conveyed by the Word of God, there’s not much difference between adultery and divorcees who themselves have committed adultery by illegitimate divorce and remarriage. There is hardly any difference. They need time to repent! Do you understand? America needs time to repent! You say, ‘Why don’t you call for it?’ America needs time to repent of their homosexuality, of their adultery, and their porn addictions…

“Friends! They’re bound for hell! Do you understand, it’s not so much an issue of the death penalty, it’s an issue of God’s judgment that’s hanging upon this nation today.”

On the Death Penalty for Rebellious Children:

“It may come as a shock to some that Jesus would Himself affirm the Old Testament civil sanction of the death penalty for a young man who goes to the extent of cursing his own father or mother. Some have taken great offense to our Lord’s position here on the law of God, but we live in an era where antinomianism and rebellion is the rule of the day. Of course, this cursing of father or mother is almost unheard of in societies that still retain some basic social order. Only a society that has witnessed four to five generations of social revolution, political revolution, and cultural revolution would be offended by Jesus’ statement in Matthew 15:4.”

– Kevin Swanson
“Family Life” page 87

On Abuse in the Homeschool Community:

“And by the way the report did not include references to individuals who have been sexually abused in homeschools. As far as I could tell, that was not part of the story. So first of all, let me say from the outset that sexual abuse, physical abuse — that’s verifiable, 2 or 3 witnesses, etc., etc., k? — a court or trial works through the issue and sure enough, someone was sexually abused? — that’s really, really bad….

“But when you talk about things like spiritual abuse, emotional abuse, educational neglect — we’re talking about things that are very, very slippery. Very, very hard to get your hands around. Okay? And it’s fun for people to use those terms because, you know, you can just bring accusations against anybody and everybody as you use the slippery terms that are very, very hard to define.”

On Larry Nassar’s Abuse:

“There is an infatuation with the body, and, of course, the sexual aspects of the body as well. Some sports encourage immodesty, revealing large portions of the body and this happens in some sports. These are the risky sports. Here they are, what are the risky sports? Gymnastics. Gymnastics and swimming. These are the sports in which there is an added risk.

“Why are all of the gymnasts more of a risk than other sports? Do you really want your daughters involved in a sport that involves a fair amount of immodesty in which red-blooded American male coaches are interacting with these girls? Or, worse yet, where the infatuation of the body eventually affects the lesbian coaches?”

On the movie “Frozen”:

“Friends, this is evil, just evil. I wonder if people are thinking: ‘You know I think this cute little movie is going to indoctrinate my 5-year-old to be a lesbian or treat homosexuality or bestiality in a light sort of way.’ I wonder if the average parent going to see Frozen is thinking that way. I wonder if they are just walking in and saying, ‘Yeah, let’s get my five-year-old and seven-year-old indoctrinated early.’ You know they’re not, I think for the most part they’re oblivious. Maybe they do pick up on pieces of it but they just don’t get up and walk out.”

On COVID:

“We had the most significant Pride marches in the world in 2019. Tens of millions of people on the major streets and the capitals of London, Madrid, New York City, etc. These are the places that have been hit the hardest with the COVID-19 virus. And so what we have is a humbling of the nation. We would like to be humble marches, but there wouldn’t be any humble marches because everybody would be on their knees and it’s hard to march when you’re on your knees.

“So that’s the position where we need to be. God is bringing his judgment upon the nation and a severity. There’s something of his wrath that certainly is being displayed and demonstrated as we read in Romans 1, perhaps even more obvious today than it normally is.”

On How to Fix the Culture:

“The return of fatherhood is the fundamental solution to the problem before us…

“We already have plenty of egalitarian Feminists (male and female).
We have Angry Patriarchs.
We have Irresponsible Men who Leave 37% of Children Fatherless.
We have Spineless men.
We have conservative men, who would never stand uncompromisingly, or give their lives (let alone their re-election) for a single principle.
We have liberal men, who would be happy to give up Other People’s lives and money for some worthless cause.
We have heartless and treacherous men who won’t keep their covenants.
We have Homosexual Evangelical Preachers who have confessed to national media they CAN’T Overcome their sin.
We do have 3X more homosexuals than we had in 1990.
And we have 70% of little boys not grown up by 30 years of age, per Newsweek Magazine.
We have 80% of missionaries – women.
We have plenty of conservatives running for Political Office with Lesbian and Fornicating Daughters.
We have men who refuse to sacrifice for their wives.
We have men who lack the courage to repent of their own sin before their families in humility and tears.
We have men who have learned to insulate themselves from relationships that demand reservoirs of wisdom, courage, and love.
We have men who spend their days smoking peyote, playing video games, and engaging in tribal warfare.
We have macho men who couldn’t lead a poodle on a potty walk.”

On Taylor Swift:

“Taylor Swift, most popular female singer in America today, released a song promoting the Leviticus 16 list of abominations, pretty much.

“’You Need to Calm Down’ is the name of the song, and she’s apparently telling God to calm down about all of his ethical concerns. I don’t think it’s going to be effective, but that’s what she’s doing.

“So what do we say to Taylor Swift and her new concoction ‘You Need to Calm Down’?

“I think we just tell Taylor Swift that she’s a fool. That she doesn’t fear God, and sooner or later, God will cut her down. And may she be broken at the Cross of Jesus Christ and realize she’s a sinner and she’s a sinner in desperate need of a savior, and that’s the message for all of us.”

On Professors Asking about Lust:

“In my college days, I never had a single professor ask me about the sins of my youth, whether I was struggling with lust or pride. Not once did I see a chemistry professor fall on his knees in the chemistry laboratory, trembling before the Creator of this marvelous, orderly, complex creation! For it seemed as if worship was incompatible with chemistry. Yet even worse, I never had a professor at seminary address my tendency toward pride, a fault easily detectable in my theological papers! A thousand censures on such an abominable system of education that we have incorporated into this Western, materialist world! We have separated character, the fear of God, and life from the business of knowledge, and have destroyed education in the process. May God forgive us.”

On How Science Classes Should Go:

What then would constitute a good science class, for example? Picture the instructor describing the order, the beauty, the complexity, the expanse, and the glory of the universe, the human body, and the animal kingdom. Then, he lifts his arms and whispers to the class, ‘Silence for a moment! All of you, stand in awe of Him! Stand in awe of Him! Let us worship the mighty Creator of heaven and earth.’ Anything short of this is not good science.

On Birth Control & Abortion:

“While abortion rates in this country have fallen since 1990, the use of abortifacients like Plan B pills and IUD’s have increased 500% over the last 12 years….

“God’s Word imposes criminal penalties on those who created hazardous conditions in which a child might lose his life (Ex. 21: 22-25)… To purposefully kill a child in its mother’s womb ought to be a crime. Certainly, it is a sin. Also, to purposefully create hazardous conditions in the womb for the unborn child (by taking a drug that would thin the endometrium of the uterine wall) is a violation of the sixth commandment (Ex. 20:13).”

On Family Collapse & Obergefell V. Hodges:

“During the previous ten generations, from 1800 to 1960, the family economy collapsed and fatherhood disintegrated. Following the weakening of fatherhood came the breakdown of the family in tandem with the sexual revolution of the 1960s. The most pronounced and irrefutable attestation to the fact of social disintegration and the breakdown of the family came with the rise of homosexuality in the entire Western world. When the United States Supreme Court provided the highest approval and official certification of the homosexual lifestyle in 2015 (with the Obergefell V. Hodges ruling), it sealed the fate of an entire civilization. Social systems had eroded gradually over the previous hundred years, and the Supreme Court of the United States only placed a headstone on the grave.”
